The JLPT N5 is the most basic level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. This course prepares you for the exam while building practical communication skills.

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 is the entry-level certification that demonstrates basic understanding of Japanese. It is recognized by educational institutions and employers worldwide as proof of foundational Japanese language ability.

At Nihongo Kaiwa School, our N5 course is designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of Japanese. Over 6 months, you'll progress from learning the writing systems to holding basic conversations and understanding simple texts.

Upon completion, you'll be able to read and write hiragana and katakana, understand approximately 100 kanji characters, use basic grammar structures, and communicate in everyday situations.

  • Writing Systems: Complete mastery of Hiragana (46 characters) and Katakana (46 characters) including proper stroke order and pronunciation
  • Kanji Characters: Approximately 100-120 essential kanji characters covering numbers, days, time, directions, common objects, and basic verbs
  • Vocabulary: 800+ essential words for daily communication including greetings, family, food, shopping, time, weather, and common activities
  • Grammar Fundamentals: Basic sentence structure, particles (ใฏใ€ใŒใ€ใ‚’ใ€ใซใ€ใงใ€ใธใ€ใจใ€ใ‚‚ใ€ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใพใงใ€ใฎ), verb conjugations (present, past, negative, te-form)
  • Listening Skills: Understanding slow, clear Japanese in everyday contexts including introductions, shopping, directions, and simple conversations
  • Reading Comprehension: Reading short passages, signs, notices, emails, and simple stories using basic vocabulary and grammar
  • Speaking Practice: Self-introductions, asking and answering simple questions, ordering food, making requests, and expressing preferences
  • Writing Skills: Writing simple sentences, filling out forms, writing short emails and messages in Japanese
  • Cultural Understanding: Japanese etiquette, customs, greetings, bowing, gift-giving culture, and basic social norms
